Pet Emergency Steps

If you are experiencing a pet emergency:

  1. Stay calm.
Your pet can sense your stress. Speak softly and move slowly. Staying calm will help you think clearly and keep your pet safer.

  2. Call us first.
When possible, call Silvercreek Animal Hospital at (519) 837-2770 before you leave. Tell us what’s happening and when you expect to arrive. This helps our team get ready with any supplies or equipment your pet may need.

  3. If you suspect poisoning.
If your pet may have eaten a toxin or poison, contact the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center at (888) 426-4435 for immediate guidance. They can advise you on first steps and may open a case number we can use to guide treatment when you arrive. Please keep that case number handy.

  4. If your pet is choking.
Only if it is safe, quickly look inside your pet’s mouth to see if you can see a visible object. Do not put your fingers deep into the throat, as frightened pets may bite and objects can be pushed further down. Call us for further instructions.

  5. If your pet is bleeding.
Apply firm, steady pressure to the wound using a clean cloth, towel, or bandage. Keep pressure on the area while you transport your pet to the clinic.

  6. If you suspect a broken bone or back injury.
Limit movement as much as possible. Gently place your pet on a flat, stable surface (such as a board or a thick blanket) and avoid bending the spine. Lift from underneath rather than pulling on legs or neck.

  7. Be cautious – even with gentle pets.
A pet in pain may bite or scratch, even if they are normally very friendly. Use a blanket or towel to gently wrap or support them, and avoid putting your face near theirs.
